No. 10 Francis Marion edges Young Harris 5-4 in PBC opener
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Francis Marion University edged Young Harris College 5-4 in a Peach Belt Conference women's tennis match Sunday (Feb. 17) afternoon at the Bob & Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex.
The 10th-ranked Patriots improved to 6-0 overall and to 2-0 in the conference while the Mountain Lions fell to 4-2 and 0-1. Young Harris will return to action Saturday (Feb. 23) when they entertain PBC-foe University of North Carolina at Pembroke. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
Francis Marion took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The lone victory for the Mountain Lions came at the first flight as Jane Plevako and Charlotte Dawson upset the No. 17 tandem of Mona Blauen and Julia Graf 8-4.
The Patriots clinched the match when Graf defeated Lina Parra Pava 6-3, 6-2 in the third flight of singles. Plevako, who is ranked No. 24 in singles, edged Blauen, who is 25th, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the first flight. Carolina Hernandez registered the other YHC win as she took a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Caitlin Siney in the sixth flight.
