Flying Fleet sweep doubleheader from Mountain Lions
DUE WEST, S.C. – Erskine College swept a softball doubleheader from Young Harris College Monday (April 16) afternoon at the EC Softball Complex.
The Flying Fleet improved to 21-21 with 5-3 and 8-6 wins over the Mountain Lions, who fell to 25-20. Young Harris travels to Mount Berry, Ga., for their final road games of the season when they face Berry College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
The Mountain Lions took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener as they scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice by Kayla Jones. Erskine took advantage of three Young Harris errors to score five runs off Young Harris starter Victoria Sink (11-6) in the fifth inning. The big hit for the Flying Fleet was a two-run homer – her fifth of the season - by Morgan Purcell.
Young Harris got two runs back on Sydnee Weaver's two-out single in the seventh by Kelsey Spurrier (12-7) wiggled out of further harm to claim the complete-game win.
The Mountain Lions took a 4-0 lead as they score twice in both the first and second innings. Paige Sexton had an RBI double and Jones contributed an RBI single in the first. Young Harris added two unearned runs in the second as they made the most of three errors committed by the Flying Fleet in the inning.
Erskine responded by scoring seven runs off Young Harris starter Katie-Jo Gentry (7-12) in the bottom of the third. Ashlyn Hicks' two-run single tied the game at 4 and Colleen Gardner followed with a RBI-single to give the Flying Fleet the lead for good.
Weaver drove in a run in the sixth for the Mountain Lions on an infield hit and Young Harris added an unearned run on two Erskine errors in the seventh to pull within 8-6, but that would be as close as they would get.
