Mountain Lions silence Wolves with sweep
NEWBERRY, S.C. – Young Harris College won their second consecutive softball doubleheader in as many days as the Mountain Lions defeated Newberry College 3-0 and 3-1 Sunday (April 15) afternoon at the NC Softball Field.
The Mountain Lions improved to 25-18 while the Wolves fell to 18-27. Young Harris faces Erskine College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Monday (April 16) in Due West, S.C.
Young Harris took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one. Sydnee Weaver singled and Emily Wilson followed with a homer – her fifth of the season - to left field. The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the fourth. Brittany Allen started the rally with a ground-rule double before scoring on Tori Dyer's RBI double down the left-field line.
Victoria Sink improved to 11-5 with her complete-game effort. She struck out five and scattered six hits. Shelley Jeffcoat (5-11) took the loss for the Wolves.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of game two. Kayla Jones hit her third homer of the season as she connected on a solo shot down the left field line. Young Harris pushed across another run on a wild pitch by Kaylyn Camacho (6-6).
Newberry got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI-infield single by Casey Stevens. Young Harris added an insurance run in the sixth as the Mountain Lions took advantage of two miscues.
Katie-Jo Gentry (7-11) earned the win while Sink pitched the final two innings to earn her fourth save.
