Mountain Lions, Trojans split doubleheader
ANDERSON, S.C. – Young Harris College and Anderson (S.C.) University split a college softball doubleheader Tuesday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Smethers Field. The Trojans took the opener 14-0 in five innings while the Mountain Lions took a 5-4 decision in the nightcap.
Young Harris improved to 6-8 while the Trojans improved to 15-3. Young Harris was to have played a doubleheader Wednesday (Feb. 29) at home against Brevard College, but that game has been postponed due to the expected rains in the region. A reschedule date hasn't been determined as of yet. The Mountain Lions will next play Thursday (March 1) when they host Truett-McConnell College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at E.D. Rivers Field.
Anderson jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a run-scoring single by Danielle Swygert and a ground out by Rachel Rhodes in the first inning of the second game before Young Harris batted around in the second and scored five runs.
Leanne Brooks, Emily Wilson and Jennifer Watford had RBI singles for the Mountain Lions as they also took advantage of two Anderson errors to score the other two runs. Anderson got a run back on Abby Child's leadoff homer in the third and scored another in the bottom of the seventh as pinch-hitter Stephanie Harvey singled up the middle to pull the Trojans within a run at 5-4. However, Young Harris reliever Victoria Sink earned her first save as she got the final two outs to preserve the win for starter Lisa Wilson (2-0).
Anderson scored in every inning as they took the opener over the Mountain Lions. Swygert drove in five runs while Child knocked in two more. Katie-Jo Gentry (1-7) absorbed the loss for Young Harris.
