Young Harris, Georgia Southwestern State split doubleheader

AMERICUS, Ga. –  Young Harris College scored eight unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to win the nightcap 11-5 over Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon in a softball doubleheader at Lady Canes Field. The Hurricanes earned the split with a 7-1 win in the opener.

Young Harris improved to 3-1 while Georgia Southwestern State fell to 3-5. Young Harris returns to action Wednesday (Feb. 15) when they open its home schedule with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against North Greenville University.

With Georgia Southwestern holding a 5-1 lead after four innings, the Mountain Lions sent 12 batters to the plate in the decisive inning. Young Harris took advantage of four miscues by the Hurricanes in the inning. Brittany Allen and Suzannah Eubanks had back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the score at 5. Young Harris took the lead for good at 6-5 as Karli Timms followed on a single. The Mountain Lions added three more runs on a throwing error by the shortstop later in the inning.

Victoria Sink (2-0) earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Georgia Southwestern State scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning in the opener off Young Harris starter Katie-Jo Gentry (1-1). Avery Purser, Jessica Chewing and Mason Moreland each had RBI hits for the Hurricanes while Hayley Knight added a sacrifice fly in the inning.

Young Harris got its lone run in the seventh on a RBI single by Jennifer Watford.
