YOUNG HARRIS – Former Young Harris College right-handed pitcher Steven Voigt Jr,. a 2010 alumnus, will be a part of a special ceremony on Saturday, May 21 as he will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the New York Yankees-New York Mets game during Military Day at Yankee Stadium.

Voigt lost his father, Navy SEAL Petty Officer Steven M. Voigt Sr., SEAL Team Eight, in 1996. He has received tremendous support from the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF). It is their goal to offer a college education to all survivors of Special Forces killed in the line of duty or in training.

Voigt is attending Athens Technical College, but intends to pitch for a Division I school next year. He is a 2007 graduate of Camden County High School and was the Region 3-AAAAA MVP on a team that reached the Final 4. He pitched at Augusta State University in 2008 and at Young Harris College in 2010. He pitched for the wood bat league Athens Pirates in the summer of 2010 and will continue to pitch for the Pirates this summer.

During the 2010 season, Voigt pitched in 19 games, starting in three. He was 4-2 with a 6.44 ERA in 50.1 innings. He was fourth on the team in strikeouts with 45.

In 1996, Voigt moved to Camden County and was raised by his grandparents, Fred and Ann Voigt.
